Wexford project progresses to the finals of the .ie Digital Town Awards 2024

ie, the national registry for .ie domain names, has announced that an entry from Wexford has been shortlisted a finalist in the ‘.ie Digital Town Awards 2024’…

Now in their 4th year, the .ie Digital Town Awards shine a light on local projects that have a digital element. The organisation provides the pathway for people, communities and businesses to access and unlock a digital world of potential and opportunity by managing the infrastructure that allows this to happen. This year 41 finalists have been selected out of 150 applicants. There are 9 different categories, with a total prize fund of €60,000. Winners will be announced at a Gala awards ceremony in Sheraton Hotel, Athlone, Co. Westmeath on Friday 24th May 2024.

Wexford’s ‘Nature walker App’ is a finalist in the Community Digital category. The aim of this project is to give people who are unable through physical or psychological impairments the opportunity to explore a park or scene of natural beauty. As a secondary requirement, it is desirable that the augmented reality app encourages participation in physical activity. This app could be associated as a scaffolding exercise, wherein the familiarity of seeing the area of interest will encourage the user to eventually visit the area (if they are able to do so, with whichever assistance they require) according to Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development theory.

Congratulating the finalists, National Director, .ie Digital Town Programme Oonagh McCutcheon told Wexford Weekly that:

“At .ie, our purpose is to enable and empower people, communities and businesses across Ireland to thrive online and we are advocates for all things digital at all levels. The .ie Digital Town Awards are a celebration of the incredible work being undertaken at a local level to promote innovation and breathe new life into local communities. The awards also afford the opportunity to recognise and show appreciation to the volunteers across the country who devote their spare time working tirelessly to enhance their local area, towns and villages and we look forward to celebrating all of our finalists at our Gala Awards ceremony in May’.

Chair of the .ie Digital Town Awards 2024 judging committee Joan Mulvihill added:

“The calibre of entries we received for this years’ awards has been astounding – I speak on behalf of my fellow judges when I say that we were blown away by the wealth of stories and commend each and every entrant who took the time to complete an application.  The digital future looks incredibly bright when we look at adoption of digital technology to solve everyday problems in towns and communities across the country.”
