Wexford sharpshooter to miss last Allianz Hurling League clash

It’s not the news that the young man wanted to hear…

Fethard-St Mogues club-man, Cian Byrne, has been ruled out of Wexford’s last Allianz Hurling League clash. The young Wexford man picked up a straight red card in the Allianz League clash against Clare after an accidental strike on defender, Darragh Lohan.

As per a report in this week’s Wexford People newspaper, Wexford GAA appealed the decision to the relevant authorities, however, the red card was not overturned and Byrne had to watch the Wexford vs Galway match from the stands.

An appeal was lodged, by Wexford GAA, but he was deemed to be “behaving in any way which is dangerous to an opponent.” The hearing took place on 27th February, as per a report on the GAA’s official website regarding the appeal.

It’s more bad news for the Wexford sharp-shooter though, as he will also miss out on Wexford’s last clash against Limerick in the Allianz Hurling League on March 22nd due to a “repeat infraction.”

This is because he received two red cards in the space of twelve months, meaning that his suspension lasts two games, ruling him out of action. Byrne’s other red card was received in Wexford’s LSHC against Galway back on May 4th, 2024, within the 12 month period.

Although still young, the Wexford man has became a regular feature on Keith Rossiter’s starting fifteen – and for most people, he would be a guaranteed starter given his point-scoring ability and the threat he possess in attack.

It’s not all negative news though. Byrne will return to action for the Model County on April 19th, when Davy Fitzgerald’s Antrim visit Wexford Park for the opening round of the Leinster Senior hurling championship. Meanwhile, in related news, Rapparees defender and long-serving Wexford full-back, Liam Ryan, is in contention to return to the fold for Wexford’s last clash against Limerick.

Wexford will be taking on Limerick on March 22nd at the Gaelic Grounds. Depending on other results, it’s a game that both teams might need to win to avoid relegation. Other than the Limerick game, Wexford have played all of their games and the Model County can only accumulate more points should they defeat Limerick. On the other hand, Limerick still need to play Galway, Kilkenny, and Wexford. A win for Limerick in any of those remaining games, will see Wexford relegated to Division 1B.
