Watch: Jack O’Connor straight red card versus Antrim

Wexford travel to Parnell Park this Saturday to take on Dublin…

It’s a huge game for both sides. A win for either side will catapult them into an excellent position for the remainder of the Leinster Senior hurling championship.

Wexford will have to do without one of their experienced attackers for their clash against the Dubs though. Jack O’Connor received a straight-red card, given by referee Colm Lyons on the 22nd minute mark after consulting with his two umpires.

The Sunday Game provided a short highlights package of the Wexford versus Antrim game and the video of O’Connor’s incident has since surfaced online:

O’Connor’s red card will come as a blow for Wexford, especially given that O’Connor is one of the few Wexford attackers with a strong physical presence.

Looking at the incident in real-time, it’s hard to pinpoint whether or not his red card was justified. But one thing remains clear: he will be missing the clash against Dublin – and Wexford will need to remain disciplined against Dublin this weekend if they’re to emerge victorious.

Speaking about the incident on The Wexford Hurling Podcast, Wexford’s JJ Doyle said:

“Five minutes prior to that, the two of them were getting to know each other – two absolutely massive men. But someone saw something. It was very hard to see on The Sunday Game. You couldn’t really see anything either – I’m not sure if there’s any more footage that’s more definitive or not. One crowd will say that it did happen, others will say that it did happen. It’s one of those. It is what it is now. It’s very hard to get things overturned, unless there’s a blatant mistake nowadays,” JJ Doyle said.
