A current Wexford Senior hurling selector is worried about the future of Wexford hurling…
Oulart-The Ballagh man, Des Mythen, is currently involved in the Wexford Senior hurling backroom team, working as a selector under clubman Keith Rossiter.
Both Garry Doran and Ben Bernie from The Wexford Hurling Podcast caught up with Mythen to discuss Wexford’s performances in the Leinster Senior hurling championship for 2025.
“I think people might be right. We are in a bit of limbo at the minute. I’m not sure about how good we’re going to be in a few years. That obviously stems from our lack of success at underage and the lack of star players coming through. We need to get the Conor McDonald’s, Rory O’Connor’s, and Lee Chin’s coming through. I’m not sure – looking through the grades – I’m not sure of too many players coming through. Back then, you would have heard about players coming through. I would be worried like. Hopefully, we keep some of the players – they can play another two or three years.”
“And then it’s about developing the players like Sean Rowley, Simon Roche, Darragh Kehoe in the 20s – and hopefully they turn into Matt O’Hanlons, Lee Chins over a period of time. It won’t happen overnight. I’ve seen the club championships over the last two years. I know every player. There’s not too many that you could say ‘they definitely should be in the squad’ so I’m worried about what’s coming.”
“From the other teams, the likes of Limerick, Dublin.. they look to have a good lot coming through. We had the good under 20 team, but they’re all there now. We don’t have a conveyor belt, like Cork. I don’t know why we’re going so bad in underage, we’ve good lads over the teams – but you can only work with what best you have. If your team isn’t good enough, it’s not good enough. We need a boost in the underage section, because there’s so much negativity. They’re all doing bad at the one time, and it’s a big worry with regards to what’s happening,” Mythen said.
Interestingly, Mythen also pinpointed that Wexford need to put in “extra work” to star players because right now, we’re lacking the star players coming through. He noted that although Wexford can beat any team on any given day, Wexford need to find these star players – and if not, Wexford will always “be up and down”.
