Wexford Senior footballer to undergo surgery after serious injury

A current Wexford Senior footabller is set to undergo surgery….

Wexford Senior footballer, Martin O’Connor, will receive surgery tomorrow (Monday) after he picked up a serious injury against Antrim in their previous Tailteann Cup clash.

Bunclody clubman O’Connor was forced off the field via a stretcher after he picked up an achilles injury against Antrim last weekend.

O’Connor’s committment made national headlines earlier this year when it was revealed that he was travelling to and from Germany to play for the Model County.

The Wexford man’s club wished him a speedy recovery, with the recovery time for such injuries typically ranging from 6 to 12 months:

“Everyone at Half Way House Bunclody GAA Club extends their very best wishes to Martin O’Connor as he prepares to undergo surgery tomorrow Monday for a serious Achilles injury sustained in the Tailteann Cup Preliminary Quarter Final versus Antirm in Wexford Park last Sunday.”

“Martin has been an outstanding ambassador for our club, both on and off the field. His performances this year with the Wexford Senior Footballers in their promotion winning Allianz Football League have earned him praise nationwide with several Team of the week places and a nomination for footballer of the week.”

“Martin has been an instrumental figure in the team’s successful Division 4 campaign, since his return to the intercounty fold, Martin played a huge role in Wexford’s unbeaten run, which culminated in promotion to Division 3 and a memorable league final appearance at Croke Park.”

“Whether in defence or pushing forward, Martin’s composure, work rate, and commitment have earned him widespread respect. Despite facing the added challenge of travelling from Germany throughout the season, his dedication to representing both club the past couple of years and county since his comeback this year has been remarkable.”

“Now, as he takes on a different kind of challenge we wish him a successful surgery, and all the strength and patience needed for a full recovery. Knowing the drive and discipline he brings to the game, we have no doubt he’ll face the road ahead with the same determination he brings to the pitch,” HWH Bunclody said.

The Wexford Senior footballers will take on Limerick this afternoon at the Gaelic Grounds in the Tailteann Cup quarter-final. Wexford previously lost out to Limerick in the Allianz League Division 4 final in Croke Park – but John Hegarty’s charges will be hoping to right some wrongs from that game. A win for Wexford will see them play in the Tailteann Cup semi-final in Croke Park.
