Homecoming planned for European Bronze medalist Kayleigh Byrne

A special homecoming celebration is being planned in Gorey this weekend…

Local boxing talent Kayleigh Byrne will be returning home from the U-19 European Boxing Championships with a European bronze medal.

Kayleigh, a 17-year old and a member of Gorey Boxing Club, impressed at the U-19 European Championships with three superb performances, competing against opponents older and more experienced than herself.

She missed out on a place in the final after losing to England’s Ruby Imogen White, the reigning European and World Champion, who went on to win gold.

To honour Kayleigh’s incredible achievement, Gorey Boxing Club will host a homecoming event this Saturday at 5pm, where supporters will gather to welcome her back.

The celebration will begin at the club, with local piper TJ Morrissey leading a march from there up to Breens Bar, where refreshments will be provided thanks to Neil and Sharon Breen of Breens Bar and The Van.

Club members, families, and locals are encouraged to wear club colours and wave Gorey, Wexford, and Ireland flags to give their young champion a well-deserved hero’s welcome:

“It’s not often a European medal is brought back to Gorey,” said organisers, “and anyone who knows Kayleigh knows she’s an incredible kid with great dedication and heart.”
