Key defender rejoins Wexford Senior hurling panel

With promotion hopes to Division 2, most of the attention this week is for the Wexford Senior Footballers…

John Hegarty’s Wexford Senior football panel will take on Westmeath (at home) on Sunday March 22nd at 2pm. A win for the Wexford Senior Footballers will guarantee promotion to Division 2 of the Allianz Football League. Having just came up from Division 4 last season, it would be an incredible achievement.

However, along with that crucial game, the Wexford Senior hurlers will also be out in action in their last Allianz Hurling League game of the season.

Wexford will be taking on Kildare in the final round, and although it is a ‘dead rubber’, it will be an intriguing game from a tactical perspective as both teams will play each other in the opening round of the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship just a few weeks later.

Some excellent news for Keith Rossiter is the fact that Oylegate-Glenbrien clubman, Shane Reck, has rejoined the Wexford Senior hurling panel after being side-lined with an injury.

There was some speculation surrounding the sticky man-marker’s future with Wexford for this season, but manager Rossiter has since confirmed that he has recently rejoined the panel.

Reck also joins Rapparees defender Liam Ryan who recently rejoined the panel. This weekend’s clash against Kildare may come too soon for the pair, but it’s great to have these two key defenders back in the panel ahead of the looming Leinster Championship.

Ahead of the weekend, it’s likely that Keith Rossiter will be without three defenders who played a vital part throughout the Allianz League campaign to date.

Simon Donohoe, Richie Lawlor, and Philip Dempsey are struggling with injuries and may not be available for this weekend’s clash.

Donohoe limped off with a hamstring injury against Clare in their most recent Allianz Hurling League outing — and his sole attention will be on the opening round of the Leinster hurling championship. Meanwhile, it was reported in the Wexford People that both Lawlor and Dempsey are struggling with knocks, and this weekend’s game may come too soon.

This weekend’s hurling clash between Wexford and Kildare will be an interesting one. With three defenders ruled out, there’s a chance that some unfamilar faces could be lining out for the Yellowbellies.

Wexford will take on Kildare at Wexford Park on Saturday, March 21 at 5pm, with Colm McDonald taking charge of the proceedings as referee.
