Wexford hurling captain provides update on potential Rory O’Connor return

The Wexford Senior hurlers will return to action this weekend…

They’ll take on Kildare in Newbridge this Saturday to kickstart their Leinster Senior Hurling Championship campaign.

Wexford will be without Darren Codd, who broke his finger in the previous Allianz League clash against Kildare, however, Liam Ryan and Jack O’Connor will be available for selection.

One player that will be missing for the forseeable future is St Martins clubman and Wexford starr attacker, Rory O’Connor, who opted to do some travelling for the year.

Speaking to The Smaller Fish podcast ahead of this weekend’s Leinster SHC opener with Kildare was Wexford captain, Jack O’Connor, who provided an update on the potentiality of a Rory O’Connor return:

“Ah.. I’ve been on to him alright, but sure as he says himself, it would be an insult for those who are already there. He said he hasn’t done any training, felt out of shape a little bit – not much – but the County level shape is elite stuff. That’s what he’s been saying to me and his mind was made up even last Jan 2025. His girlfriend is out there and he’s taking a year. He’s been playing since he’s 17 so he’s been about 10 years playing now aswell,” Jack O’Connor said.

“We would both agree. Your fitness allows you to express your hurling. He was saying that he would need at least 4-6 weeks minimum. Everything is so tight now with the League and Championship, there’s no window anymore for anyone coming back that late,” Jack O’Conor continued.

Given those recent comments, it;’s safe to say that O’Connor won’t be playing with Wexford this year — and that he’s fully committed to enjoying his year off instead.
