Meet the 17-year old Wexford kid with UFC ambitions

At just 17 years of age, Adam “The Jobs Not Done” Duffy is already building a reputation as one of Wexford’s and Ireland’s brightest young MMA prospects….

Fighting out of Richie Ivory Academy, the Gorey teenager recently captured European gold — and he insists this is only the beginning.

Fresh off his latest triumph, Duffy spoke to Wexford Weekly about his recent success, the sacrifices behind it, his frustration with the lack of recognition for MMA in Ireland, and his dream of one day bringing UFC gold home to Ireland.

After months of sacrifice and relentless training, Duffy says finally getting his hands on European gold made every early morning worthwhile.

“I felt unreal getting that belt around my waist and I feel that the hard work has finally paid off. All the 6am sessions, all the evening sessions and all my added hard work between that, the dedication and commitment to the sport. It also makes me hungry for even better achievements in future.”

Despite already reaching a major milestone in his young career, the Gorey fighter says there is no time to slow down, with another huge target already in his sights.

“Improving my game, skillset, and overall physical attributes would be next for me over the summer and then becoming IMMAF world champion in August is our next goal,” the Gorey MMA fighter told Wexford Weekly.

While many fighters would take time off after a major tournament, Duffy says his mentality has always been about consistency and staying prepared for any opportunity that comes his way.

“I don’t believe in people taking huge layoffs and rests when they are not needed, I’m back I wasn’t hurt or anything after the fight so why should I stop now? It’s only up from here and I’m continuing my training as normal. I want to stay active, improving, and staying in shape, and if any fights are offered on short notice then I’ll be ready.”

The teenager’s ambitions stretch far beyond the amateur ranks, with the UFC firmly fixed in his long-term plans.

“My long term goals are to become Youth IMMAF champion, Amateur B world champion, have a great amateur record and become world champion and go pro… making my way to the UFC raising that undisputed Gold for Ireland.”

Like many fighters, Duffy’s journey has not been without setbacks. One of the toughest moments came in the build-up to the European Championships, when he had to undergo surgery. Away from the cage, Duffy has quietly put together an impressive list of achievements across both MMA and K1 competition.

“I have also won Nationals, International, Irish open x2, National MMA league x5, K1 World Champion, K1 European Champion.”

The 17-year-old also opened up on what he feels is a lack of recognition and support for MMA athletes in Ireland compared to more traditional sports.

“I have not received much support from my hometown and Wexford as MMA isn’t recognised in Ireland whereas other sports get all the funding which isn’t very fair as I’ve been training for 8 years without breaks and off seasons always consistent and dedicated. I’m very grateful for my sponsors that do support me but overall the recognition isn’t there for the sport locally,” the Gorey fighter said.

Still, Duffy remains fully focused on what comes next. Competing in Amateur B at his age is, he says, the right path as he continues building towards a professional career.

“Amateur B is perfect for me now as I am 17 and I’m going to win that world title, and fight a few more times before I’m 18. Going to be going amateur then and building up a good record and titles before going pro. My coach Richie Ivory has taken me very far and I plan to take this gym far and put it on the map down the line too. The UFC will be waiting!”

One thing is for sure: the name Adam Duffy is one that we’ll be hearing about in MMA circles for quite some time.
