Bemusement as Wexford Hurling League final will clash with provincial Senior hurling finals

There has been a lot of bemusement with this one…

The All County Wexford hurling league premier hurling division final between Naomh Eanna and St Martins has been fixtured in to take place on Sunday at 3pm.

But also this Sunday, two of the biggest hurling games will take place in the GAA calendar.

Both the Leinster hurling final between Galway and Kilkenny, and then the Munster hurling final between Clare and Limerick will take place at similar times. They’re games on the calendar that we, as GAA fans, all mark at the start of the year and look forward to watching and appreciating as spectators and hurling fans.

The Clare and Limerick match will take place at 4pm, while the Galway and Kilkenny provincial final will take place at 1:45pm.

While Wexford GAA may be under pressure to run the fixture off, one could only imagine that a 7pm / 8pm clash later that evening would work better.

From a Wexford fixturing perspective, surely it doesn’t make sense to play the county’s biggest game over the last number of weeks bang smack in the middle of these two clashes?

But it does. And so much so that they must be expecting a big crowd to budge from their sofas to watch the game because Wexford GAA are charging into the game between St Martins and Naomh Eanna too. For the few interested, tickets can be purchased online for 8 euro, while students cost 5 euro.

Some critics have suggested that this highlights the insignificant value that they place on the All County Leagues, as very few hurling neutrals will actually attend this game now given the schedule.

One of many people bemused by the situation is St Martins club man, Daithí Waters.

For those interested in watching two cracking games of hurling in both the Leinster Championship and the Munster Championship respectively, then you can sit at home and turn on the telly!
