Barry O’Connor Now Pushing For Senior Squad Selection With Sydney Swans

Barry O’Connor is now pushing for Senior squad selection with AFL club Sydney Swans…

The St Martins club man and Wexford native arrived in Australia last year, and already, he is pushing for a spot with the Sydney Swans Seniors.

He was placed into the Category B Rookie team — but now, with the injuries to two of the Swans’ players, he is now fighting for a place on the AFL senior squad.

Charlie Gardiner, who is Executive General Manager of Football at Sydney Swans, said it presents a great opportunity for another two players, one of them being Wexford’s Barry O’Connor.

“While the significant injuries to Isaac and Sam Naismith are unfortunate, placing them on our long-term injury list means that Barry and Sam have an opportunity to press for senior selection,” Gardiner said.

“Barry joined the club from Ireland last year and has impressed with the way he has adapted to the game.”

“It’s been a whirlwind first year for Barry, arriving to the bushfires and then having the season postponed. But through all of that he’s shown great resilience and has worked hard on his skills and the technical aspects of the game,” Gardiner said, speaking to Sydney Swans’ official website.
