Wexford GAA Chairman Highlights Need For Safe Return To Play For Children

Wexford GAA Chairman Micháel Martin spoke to Bryan Dobson of RTE Radio One today…

Wexford GAA Chairman and school principal Micháel Martin has urged the Government to consider a safe return to play for children:

“It’s absolutely welcomed, necessary, and it’s hugely important that children are allowed to gather again in an organised and safe way to play sport. From the research we have done… it’s something that children are craving. They really need it.”

“Last year, 71,000 attended the GAA’s Cul Camps and no direct cases came from that. The GAA are organising a Be Ready To Play programme at the moment.

“Back in early March (2020), we were calling on the relevant authorities to set out a pathway. As a school principal, the Department of Education set out a pathway of the requirements and the steps that needed to happen to open school’s safely. Now, we need the equivalent to happen for the sporting organisations,” he said, speaking to RTE Radio One.

After last year, it’s clear that children can play sports in a safe manner. Martin highlighted that last year’s process worked and that it serves as a template for a safe-return to sports for children:

“Our team in Wexford would have a very professional set up in terms of one-way system, restrictions on parent gathers. When the activities are taking place, there’s a huge emphasis on the sanitisation of equipment along with hand sanitisation in and out.”

“Prior to attending any sporting activity last year, there were health questionnaires. The process from last year is there. With the new variants, that probably needs to be reviewed but if there’s scope to improve it, let’s improve it and let’s get the children back. There are visible signs that children are less healthy than this time last year,” he concluded in the short RTE Radio One interview.

There is no doubt that the children in this country are currently being left behind and that this should be one of the top priorities for the Government as they look at easing some of the current Covid-19 restrictions.
