Former Wexford footballer Adrian Flynn explains how he got the nick-name ‘Panther’

The latest episode of the One Life One Club vodcast aired on Saturday…

Adrian Flynn and Mick Caulfield of the Gusserane O’Rahilly’s were the guests for Season 2, Episode 5 of the One Life One Club vodcast.

Former Wexford footballer and Gusserane club man Adrian Flynn had a unique nickname. He was nicknamed the Panther, a nick-name that has stuck for most of his life.

He discussed how he got the nick-name:

“We played Louth in 2008 and Liam Spratt of South East Radio asked me this question too. I should have told the fake story – and that I’m fast. But the actual story is that my best friend, Kenneth, put it on me when I was about 14 or 15.”

“My mother was listening to this on the radio. There was a party. She never heard this story. There was a lad who lived in our estate, he was called the Pink Panther. He lived a few doors up from us and I think he had nine or ten kids. We would have went to school with a few of his sons. and daughters and stuff like that.”

“My best friend Kenneth tried to say that he was my father – and that he got up to no good of business up here in Powers (pub) one night.”

“I told this story on the radio – and my mother was sitting at home listening to this. I’d say she didn’t speak to me for about a week. She wasn’t too happy,” he said.

Adrian Flynn was speaking on the One Life One Club vodcast. The full 36-minute clip can be listened to below:
