Why you should support Wexford FC

Over the last couple of days, I wondered how I would start off writing my first article for Wexford Weekly. As Wexford FC travel away to the Mountains of Dublin to play Wayside Celtic in the FAI Cup, I decided to write about why you should support Wexford FC…

More or less during COVID, I fell out of love with football. I was always a Manchester United fan since 1998 and started to just go through the motions. I started to search for teams to support or at least follow. I tried teams from Ligue One to the Bundesliga and as far afield as Portland Timbers in the MLS.

I said I would try a team close to home (only 30 minutes away from my house) Wexford FC. I went to a couple of matches last season and this season, against Galway United, Waterford FC and Cobh Ramblers. You could say, I fell in love or at least going to Wexford FC.

Going back to Wexford FC themselves, they are in the midst of a playoff push with eleven games left. They are currently sitting on thirty points having played twenty three games and sit two points off of Bray Wanderers who’ve played a game more.

Their catch up game is this August when they play Finn Harps and Athlone Town in a four day stretch on the 9th and 12th.

I’ve gone to my first game of the season recently against Cobh Ramblers and the experience was great. Firstly, I was amazed with the new Club shop and picked up a Wexford FC pen and cap on the night.

On the pitch, from a footballing point of view what stood out to me was: Ethan Boyle. The former Shamrock Rovers and Finn Harps midfielder marshaled the Wexford midfield and kept on chatting and encouraging his Wexford colleagues throughout the game.

Wexford on the night, especially in the second half, played a swashbuckling style of football. It was a pretty even first half with things starting to open up in the second half. Wexford would eventually run out with a 3-0 win with goals coming from Darragh Levingston, Aaron Dobbs and Mikie Rowe.

  1. Hi Aaron, thank you so much for sharing your really positive experience. We have a long way to go, but we are definitely making progress. We want Wexford FC to be a community club and to help progress football in our county.
    Thank you,
