Former Tipperary hurler Shane McGrath was the most recent guest on the Wexford Hurling Podcast…
McGrath joined Ben Bernie and Garry Doran on this week’s episode of tThe Wexford Hurling Podcast. Discussing an array of topics, one point that he made was in relation to Wexford’s next clash against Kilkenny stands out.
Wexford will take on Kilkenny this weekend in the third round of the Allianz Hurling League. After their opening two games, Wexford sit on the bottom of the table, having lost out to Cork in the opening game and then to Tipperary last weekend.
“It’ll be hard to see them beat them, but if Wexford could get a few bodies back, get a good crowd down in Wexford Park – and as you said, it would take much to get them going – then I would definitely give Wexford a shout. I think there’s an improvement, but I’m sure the Kilkenny lads are going to be looking at this as a game they’re expected to win. But I’m sure the war cry will go up during the week; get the crowd down there, a good buzz there. I feel Wexford need 2 or 3 of their big guys there if they’re going to win that game.”
In Wexford’s remaining games, they will have to play Galway, Clare and Limerick, which are going to be three difficult games for the Model County. With two losses from two, McGrath believes it’s a must-win for Keith Rossiter’s Wexford.
“I think this is a must-win for Wexford. It’s only Round 3 – it’s early doors, 50% of the way there but you’re not going to be fancying the Limerick game or the Clare game. They’re going to get more and more players back. It’s going to be later on in the Leagues, so you’re going to have to be looking at this saying ‘if we don’t get two points, or get something out of this realistically we could find ourselves in the bottom two here’,” McGrath said.
Wexford were handed a boost on Sunday, when it was revealed that their captain – Lee Chin – has returned to the training panel. Rory O’Connor will also feature in the next clash against Kilkenny after he was ruled out of the Tipperary clash due to a suspension. Whether Chin will feature or not remains to be seen though. Just returned from a trip to Australia, he may not yet be up to inter-county standard.
