Wexford woman appears as guest on the Tommy Tiernan Show

A Wexford woman appeared as a guest on the latest airing of the Tommy Tiernan Show…

Wexford woman, Siobhan Doyle, is a cultural historian, museum curator, and an author. Over the weekend, she joined host Tommy Tiernan on the hit RTÉ chat show.

Doyle, originally from Wellingtonbridge in County Wexford, has authored the book ‘A history of the GAA through objects‘.

“I do a lot of work around the GAA, and GAA memorabilia. That’s a nice time-line; 1884 up until the present day. I went around the country – I travelled the 32 counties of Ireland collecting stories through objects. Through jerseys, trophies, medals…” she said.

Interestingly, she spoke about one of the oldest piece of GAA memorabilia she came across:

“There are hair hurling balls that date back to the 15th and 16th century. Some are in the Kerry County Museum and National Museum of Ireland. They have been radio-carbon dated to tell us that hurling had been playing in the 15th century. They’re made of cow hair and matted horse hair. You have to use what you have. They are probably the oldest surviving GAA object,” she said.

Doyle currently works at the National Museum of Ireland at Collin’s Barracks.

Right now, she’s also working on another book about 100 Irish sporting objects.
