Family-run bike shop and cafe in Wexford closes its doors

A family run bike shop in Wexford has closed its doors…

There’s a quiet sadness settling over Rosbercon as Barrow Bikes and Cafe has closed their doors, marking the end of a venture that once buzzed with energy, community spirit and the hum of spinning wheels.

Owners John Warner and Sophie Dalton recently announced that, after much deliberation, they have closed the doors for good, bringing an emotional chapter to a close.

“It is with a heavy heart that we write this,” the pair shared, reflecting on what they describe as a deeply difficult decision. What began as a passion project quickly became a hub for bike lovers, loyal locals and visitors alike.

Over the years, Barrow Bikes and Cafe carved out a unique space in the community — part café, part cycling haven — where friendships were formed over coffee and conversations stretched long after bikes were parked.

The couple spoke warmly of the people who made the journey worthwhile: the dedicated cycling community, their loyal customers and the “great team” that stood beside them. In particular, they paid tribute to Mary and Declan, whose support they say kept the doors open far longer than might otherwise have been possible.

Yet behind the warmth lies a frustration that will resonate with many small business owners. Central to their decision is the long-promised South East Greenway — a project that, they say, they believed in wholeheartedly. Years of waiting, investment and hope were poured into a vision that has yet to materialise:

“We cannot keep waiting for a Greenway that may never open,” they explained.

The closure is not just a business story; it’s a reminder of how dependent local enterprises can be on infrastructure promises and regional development plans. For Barrow Bikes and Cafe, the anticipated flow of cyclists along the greenway was meant to sustain and grow the venture. Instead, delays have left them in limbo.

Their final day of trading was Saturday, April 4th.

Despite the closure, it’s not the end of the road for the pair. They will continue operating South East Greenway Bike Hire, with a new website on the horizon.

Their fleet — ranging from children’s bikes and trailers to e-bikes — remains available, and they are keen to continue serving customers across the region.

They’ve also expressed hope of reconnecting with familiar faces over coffee in Kennedy Park during the summer months.

As Rosbercon prepares to lose one of its cherished local spots, the sense of gratitude from its owners is unmistakable: “A massive thank you to all who have supported us,” they said.

For now, the wheels may be slowing at Barrow Bikes and Cafe, but the relationships built there are likely to endure long after the doors close.
