Shocking theft at Wexford charity store leaves volunteers devastated

Volunteers at a Wexford charity shop were left disheartened this week…

The volunteers at Gorey chairty shop, Futures in Mind (formerly Talk to Tom), were left devastated with the theft. They arrived to find that donations which were painstakingly sorted the day before had been stolen in a late-night incident.

The break-in, discovered yesterday morning, saw multiple bags ripped open and items taken from the rear of the store. In a particularly upsetting detail, children’s clothing was discarded into a nearby waste bin, seemingly to clear the way for the theft.

Among the items stolen were not only donated goods but also essential equipment used by volunteers, including a trolley jack for moving heavy items and even a sweeping brush.

The charity confirmed that CCTV footage has been reviewed and the matter is being handled, though they have chosen not to release the images publicly. Instead, they have made a simple appeal: that the stolen trolley jack be returned.

While the incident has caused frustration, the organisation reiterated its open-door approach to those in need, emphasising that anyone struggling can reach out for help or guidance on available supports. They noted that, in previous cases, thefts have typically involved higher-value items rather than basic necessities.

Despite the setback, the charity was quick to praise the dedication of its volunteers and the ongoing support from the local community.

The Gorey shop is one of only two in the area run entirely by volunteers, with all proceeds funding vital counselling and education services.

Over the past 12 years, those services have delivered thousands of hours of free mental health support to people across the community.

For now, volunteers are left to pick up the pieces once again—determined that the actions of a few will not derail the work that has helped so many.
