Another blow for Wexford town as long-standing store to close down

One of Wexford town’s longest-serving independent retailers is set to close its doors, bringing an end to a remarkable era on South Main Street…

Barkers, the much-loved gift and homeware store which has traded in Wexford since 1848, has announced that it will close permanently by the June bank holiday weekend. The business has been operated by the Asple family since 1986 and has become a familiar fixture for generations of shoppers in the town.

In a statement announcing the closure, the owners said:

“After 40 years of service, and many great memories, it is with a heavy heart that we announce that Barkers is retiring. Our Retirement Sale is now on, with 30% OFF everything in-store. It’s your last chance to pick up your favourites before they’re gone. We would like to sincerely thank all of our loyal customers for your support over the years.”

Located on South Main Street, Barkers has long been known for its extensive range of giftware, crystal, cookware and home interiors, serving customers from across County Wexford and beyond.

The closure is another significant blow to the retail outlook in Wexford town, with multiple stores closing down in recent times leading to many vacant properties along the once-very-busy Main Street in Wexford town. In February of 2026, Wexford Councillor Leonard Kelly warned that Wexford’s Main Street may “never return to its former glory” with the number of empty retail units increasing (19 at the time).

The announcement has sparked widespread nostalgia locally, with many people recalling family visits to the iconic store over the decades. Following the retirement sale, the premises is expected to be placed on the market.
