Taking on an in-form Galway team is never an easy task…
But, that’s what will happen this weekend when Galway travel to Wexford Park. Whereas Wexford will be only playing for pride, Galway still require a win to qualify directly to the Leinster Senior Hurling final.
On the other hand, Wexford’s campaign is over, having won just one game (Kildare) in the Leinster Championship, and then losing to Kilkenny, Dublin, and Offaly.
Wexford’s task has become even more difficult with the loss of several players ahead of the final round-robin tie in the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship.
Wexford players missing for the upcoming Galway clash include Shane Reck, Damien Reck, Liam Ryan, Eamonn Wickham, Sean Rowley, and potentially Darragh Carley. Carley will be assessed ahead of the game, but the others will be absent for the clash.
It’s an unfortunate time for manager Keith Rossiter, especially considering the number of key players from the defence that will be missing against an in-form Galway side.
Likewise, their club teams — who will be out in action next month in the opening round of the Wexford Club championships — will be eager to see them return to action sooner rather than later.
Even though some of Wexford’s key players are missing, and that Wexford are only playing for pride, it does provide an excellent opportunity for some fringe players to get a taste of Leinster Championship hurling action.
There is a low ebb around County Wexford recently regarding their hurling team, however, the county’s football team is restoring some pride in the jersey.
Hegarty’s football side will have one eye on capturing Tailteann Cup silverware in 2026, after being promoted to Division 2 of the Allianz Football League ealier this year.
