Historic first as Wexford Pride holds first LGBTQIA+ Community Symposium

Wexford Pride is excited to announce its first Community Symposium…

The event marks a first for Wexford’s LGBTQIA+ community, providing a space for community members to engage in presentations exploring a diverse array of topics that intersect with queer identity. The event will also support ongoing fundraising efforts to support Wexford Pride’s community initiatives, including Pride at the Prom, an alternative second-chance LGBTQIA+ prom event that will be held later this year and will give adults in the community a chance to attend the prom they couldn’t have when they were younger.

It will take take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 27th in Red Books in Wexford Town.

Community Symposium attendees can expect an exciting line-up of talks and discussions led by Wexford Pride community members spanning queer disability activism, LGBTQIA+ people and sport, nature, gardening, queer history, gaming design and intersectionality. The day’s line-up will conclude with a panel discussion exploring the meaning of “pride” in County Wexford.

Veronica Victor, Community Liaison, informed Wexford Weekly that:

“The symposium is a fundraiser to support our upcoming queer prom, so every ticket sold helps! This is a beautiful chance to showcase the intelligence and passion within our brilliant community,” she said.

The symposium builds on a strong commitment to centre the voices and experiences of LGBTQIA+ people across County Wexford, building collective empowerment through fostering creativity and community. This is reflected in Aiteach Wexford Pride’s bi-monthly queer culture ‘zine, which features multidisciplinary contributions from LGBTQIA+ people in County Wexford, and political actions, including last years’ Soapbox Event, where speeches highlighted the the power of coming together in solidarity in response to the social injustice and inequality that continue to affect LGBTQIA+ people.

Rían Browne, the Public Relations Officer for Wexford Pride, stated:

“We have always followed a ground-up, community-led approach to everything we do. We believe LGBTQIA+ people deserve to take up space and be meaningfully heard. If those spaces do not exist, we come together to create them! This symposium is an extension of this, creating space for the talent, knowledge and creativity of our community to shine!’
