Key Wexford player ruled out of upcoming Westmeath clash

The stage is set for a high-stakes showdown as Wexford and Westmeath meet this weekend in a promotion decider that promises intensity and drama at Wexford Park…

For both counties, the stakes could hardly be higher. Promotion represents not just a step up in competition, but a sign of progress heading into the championship season. After strong league campaigns, Wexford and Westmeath now face the ultimate test in what is effectively a winner-takes-all encounter.

Ahead of the clash, the Wexford Senior Footballers have been dealt a blow — with a key player being ruled out of the promotion decider.

“We’ve a settled team which has been hugely beneficial for us. The lads have been consistent with their performances. Eoghan (Nolan) came off after 25 minutes the last day; he’s our captain and he’s a massive part of what we do,” he said.

Despite that, Wexford Senior football manager John Hegarty was quick to mention that Wexford had dealt with a similar blow at the start of the Allianz League campaign:

“At the same time, it’s just the case of next man up. That was the case last weekend as well. We were missing him for the first two rounds too, so it’s not something that’s brand new for us,” he told Wexford GAA.

Hegarty has called on a big support to attend the game:

“These games, small things matter. Certainly, when the Wexford crowd get behind you, they have a huge influence on the game. It’s been a while since there’s been a game like this in the Park, so hopefully there’s a big crowd there and we’ll give them something to shout about,” manager John Hegarty said.

Ahead of the game, the Westmeath manager Mark McHugh also pinpointed one major threat that Wexford carry heading into the game, nothing that Westmeath will be trying their best to minimise that.

Throw-in is set for 2pm. A large Wexford crowed is expected to cheer on the footballers. For those who cannot attend the game, it will also be broadcast live.
