The Wexford Seniors Start Their Season On Saturday

It’s nearing that time of the year again…

The Wexford Senior footballers start off their O’Byrne Cup campaign on Saturday, December 30, as they travel to Offaly to face the Faithful county, hoping to get their season off to winning ways.

Under Seamus ‘Banty’ McEnaney in 2017, the Wexford Senior footballers were promoted to Division 3 of the National Football League, despite failing to attain any silverware.

Now, under new manager Paul McLoughlin, they will be hoping to continue their progression. However, the Senior footballers have been dealt some major blows ahead of the new season, with Colm Kehoe, Jake Firman and Michael O’Regan all committing to the Wexford hurlers instead of the footballers.

Not just that, but Wexford stalwart attacker PJ Banville and long-term servant Shane Roche have retired from the inter-county scene.

The pre-season competitions act as an effective medium to test out new prospects within the county, and it’ll be interesting to see who McLoughlin opts to start during his first game in charge. After the game against Offaly, the footballers will then face a much stiffer test with All-Ireland champions Dublin coming to Enniscorthy on January 2nd.

Meanwhile, Davy Fitzgerald’s Wexford hurlers start off their campaign against Carlow in Hollymount on Wednesday, Jan 3rd under lights at 8pm.
