St Annes Clubman, Playing In County Final, Rides Winner In Thurles

St Annes are only one win away from winning another Wexford SHC title…

St Annes face St Martins this Sunday in a derby decider at Innovate Wexford Park.

When a county final looms, some players will change their preparation. Many decide to rest up, do little training, and turn their focus to the upcoming game.

One St Annes club man who’s carrying on as normal is Mikey Fogarty.

On Thursday , Fogarty rode the winner in the Premier Mares Handicap over hurles in Thurles. It was the wing back’s first winner in over two and a half-years, having previously hung up his saddle.

He rode ‘Robin Gold’ over 2m6, a horse that was trained by his brother, Johnathan Fogarty, who started at corner-forward in the club’s recent semi-final success against the Rapparees.

Both Fogarty brothers been pivotal to the Annes’ recent success, with shock wins over heavily tipped sides, the Shelmaliers and the Rapps.

Fogarty was involved in the Wexford Senior final of 2014, where St Annes lost out on Championship silverware to the Shelmaliers.

The St Annes contingent will be hoping that Fogarty’s winning ride will be a good omen, and that the celebrations continue on Sunday evening.
