Wexford’s Slaney Kempo Karate Wins 20 Medals In World Championships Held In Portugal

Wexford have had a lot of sporting success recently…

In the World Championships for Karate, a Wexford club, namely Slaney Kenpo Karate club, came away with 20 medals.

The club won nine gold medals and eleven silver or bronze medals at the World Championships, which were held in Lisbon, Portugal.

The club were immensely proud of all who took part. Speaking following their World Championship successes, the club stated that:

“The future of the club is in these kids hands and the future likes bright in Wexford.”

“Words can not express how overly proud I am of these kids. Such an amazing bunch of individuals. They came, competed won and lost while holding their heads up high. Every single one of them done themselves and the club proud . They competed with dignity and respect to everyone, which is the key to martial arts ,no matter of the result. Without dignity and respect in martial arts we’ve learnt nothing.”

“I go to bed tonight humbled by the mental strength of these kids. I am proud to be part of their life,” they said.

It follows the news that Billy Winters had also won four medals at the national stage across four Taekwondo disciplines.

It marked a very successful year for Winters, having previously picked up a bronze medal at the European Championships.

On the same weekend, three Wexford boxers were also crowned All-Ireland champions in their respective weight classes in Dublin’s National Stadium.
